Understanding Your Dental Insurance

Insurance Plans We Accept

We work with most major dental insurance providers, including:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS)

  • Delta Dental

  • Guardian

  • HealthPartners

  • United Concordia / Military Plans

We also accept many other plans as an out-of-network provider.

If you’re unsure whether we’re in-network for your plan, our team is happy to check for you.

How Dental Insurance Works

Dental insurance works differently than medical insurance. It is designed to help with basic and preventive care, not to cover all dental costs.

Here’s what that usually means:

  • Most plans cover preventive care at a higher percentage

  • Basic services may be partially covered

  • Major services are often covered at a lower percentage

  • Most plans have a yearly maximum

  • Very few plans cover 100% of treatment

Your insurance plan is a contract between you or your employer and your insurance company. Coverage decisions are made by your insurer, not by our office.

Our role is to recommend what’s best for your health, regardless of what your plan chooses to cover.

What You’re Responsible For

At the time of your visit, you are responsible for:

  • Your co-pay

  • Any deductible

  • Any portion not covered by insurance

We’ll review estimated costs with you in advance whenever possible, so you know what to expect.

Services That May Not Be Covered

Some treatments are considered elective or cosmetic and are often not covered by insurance, including:

  • Teeth whitening

  • Veneers

  • Cosmetic bonding

  • Certain specialty treatments

Even when a service is important for your comfort or confidence, your insurance company may choose not to pay for it.

We’ll help you understand your options before moving forward.

Understanding Covered vs. Non-Covered Services

Insurance companies decide coverage based on preset formulas, not on your personal dental needs.

This means:

  • Fees are often based on “usual and customary” rates set by the insurer

  • These rates may be lower than the actual cost of providing high-quality care

  • Some necessary treatments may not be covered

At Lakeville Family Dental Center, we never compromise your care to meet insurance limitations. We invest in advanced technology, skilled staff, and quality materials because your health comes first.

Our recommendations are based on what’s best for you, not what’s easiest for insurance to approve.

How Our Office Helps You

We do everything we can to support you with your insurance benefits.

Our team will:

  • Verify your coverage

  • Submit and track claims

  • Provide required documentation

  • Help with prior authorizations

  • Communicate with your insurance company

While we advocate for you, the final payment decision is always made by your insurance provider.

If additional information is needed, we may ask for your help to keep your claim moving.

Dental Insurance vs. Medical Insurance

Medical Insurance Dental Insurance
High premiums Low premiums
High annual limits Low annual limits
Covers major procedures Covers basic care
Catastrophic coverage Preventive-focused

Dental insurance is very different from medical insurance.

Dental insurance is helpful, but it’s not designed to fully fund long-term or complex dental care.

Our Commitment to Transparency

We believe you deserve clear, honest information.

We promise to:

  • Review treatment recommendations in advance

  • Answer your questions openly

  • Help you maximize your benefits

  • Respect your budget and priorities

Ultimately, you decide how to invest in your dental health and we’ll support you every step of the way.
